Heat Pump Repair
Diagnosis for heat pumps when the control checks out but the system does not.
A thermostat is the smallest part of your heating and cooling system and the one you touch every day. When it reads wrong, loses its schedule or will not call for heat, the whole house feels it.
Thermostat blank, unresponsive or calling for the wrong mode? Call and we will diagnose the control and the wiring behind it.
Click Here To Call (888) 418-3681A thermostat does one job: it senses temperature and tells the equipment when to run. Yet a surprising share of no heat and no cooling calls end at the thermostat or the thin wires connected to it. Dead batteries, a tripped switch on the equipment, loose terminals and a mode left on the wrong setting can all look like a major failure. Checking these first often saves a larger repair bill.
Placement is the problem nobody expects. A thermostat mounted on an exterior wall, in direct afternoon sun, near a kitchen, or beside a supply register reads the temperature of that spot rather than the house. The result is a system that shuts off too early or runs too long. Sometimes the best repair is relocating the control to an interior wall in a central area, with the old opening patched.
The right thermostat on the wrong wall still gives the wrong answer. Placement matters as much as the model.
Compatibility decides whether a new thermostat will work at all. Heat pumps need a control that operates the reversing valve and manages backup heat correctly. Two stage and modulating furnaces need a thermostat that can call for low and high output. Many boilers and electric baseboard heaters use different control arrangements, and a line voltage baseboard thermostat is not interchangeable with a standard low voltage model. We confirm the equipment type and terminal requirements before recommending anything.
Smart and Wi-Fi thermostats add another requirement. Most need steady power, which usually comes from a common wire. Older homes often have only two or three conductors at the wall. There are ways to solve that, including running a new cable or using a manufacturer approved adapter at the equipment, but guessing at connections can leave the system short cycling or the display going dark. For heat pumps, a misconfigured changeover setting can even run cooling when heating is requested.
Old mercury thermostats deserve careful handling. The small glass bulb inside contains mercury, which should not go in household trash. When we replace one, we remove it intact and direct it to proper hazardous waste handling.
Programming is where comfort and savings actually happen. A thermostat that holds one setting all day cannot take advantage of the hours when nobody is home or everyone is asleep. We set a schedule based on how you actually live and show you how to adjust it. On heat pump systems, we explain how aggressive setbacks can trigger backup heat, so your schedule saves energy instead of spending it.
Every replacement ends with a full test: heating, cooling, fan operation, and any stages or auxiliary heat the system has. If the control is not the issue, the diagnosis continues at the equipment, and related pages such as Heat Pump Repair explain what comes next.
Call for a thermostat diagnosis that includes the wiring and equipment response.

Poor placement, a failing sensor or a miscalibrated control can all cause false readings.
Power problems or a failing control can wipe programs and preferences.
Wiring faults and misconfigured settings can cause erratic equipment operation.
Battery, power supply or wiring issues usually need a methodical check.
On heat pumps, incorrect settings can call for electric heat too often.
Multi-stage and variable systems need a thermostat that can manage them.
We treat the thermostat as part of the system, so the work covers the control, the wiring and the equipment response.
We talk through what you are seeing, then check settings, batteries and equipment power.
Connections at the wall and at the equipment are inspected and tested.
Equipment type, stages, heat pump controls and power needs are identified.
Faults are corrected, or a compatible thermostat is installed and configured.
Heating, cooling, fan, staging and auxiliary heat are operated and verified.
A schedule is set around your routine and the controls are explained.
Most thermostat jobs are straightforward, but a few details can change the scope.
| Equipment type | Heat pumps, multi-stage furnaces and boilers each require specific control features. |
|---|---|
| Available wiring | Smart thermostats may need an added conductor or an approved power adapter. |
| Relocation | Moving the thermostat involves new cable routing and wall patching. |
| Zoning | Homes with multiple zones need controls that coordinate with dampers or zone valves. |
| Model selection | Basic programmable, smart and communicating thermostats differ widely in price. |
The thermostat reads the air around it. Sunlight, nearby supply registers, exterior walls and heat from appliances can all make that spot warmer or cooler than the rest of the room.
Many will, but compatibility depends on your equipment type and the wires available at the wall. We confirm both before installing one.
It is a conductor that provides continuous power to the thermostat. Many smart thermostats rely on it to stay powered without draining batteries or disrupting system operation.
An incompatible or misconfigured control can operate a heat pump incorrectly, such as running the wrong mode or relying too heavily on backup heat. Proper setup avoids that.
Mercury thermostats should not be thrown in household trash. They should be taken to a hazardous waste collection program. We handle this when we replace one.
They discovered the thermostat was right above a supply vent. After moving it, the house finally holds a steady temperature.
Our heat pump kept switching to backup heat. The technician fixed the settings and walked me through a schedule that makes sense.
